Please note that Chess Club will run 1 ½ hours each week

With each having several years experience, our instructors, a Chess Master/Chess Expert, will continue to educate and inspire students in the game of Chess while preparing them for local and national chess tournaments (if students choose to take part). Their program is dedicated to teaching kids how to become master problem solvers through chess.

Why Chess?
. Chess helps foster critical thinking and creativity
. Playing chess grows dendrites which manage signals in the brain that organize planning, judgment and self control
. Chess play increases IQ and test scores
. Playing chess improves concentration and discipline
. Chess enhances memory, math skills and self esteem

The Chess Club will be divided into 2 separate classes:

Beginner/Intermediate – This class will include students with little or no knowledge of the game as well as students who have more of an understanding of the rules and have played chess before. Both beginners and intermediate players will experience challenging and fun lessons according to their skill level and be taught the principles of tactics and strategy as well as more advanced moves & combinations.

Intermediate 2/Advanced – This class will include students with a complete understanding of the game as well as those students who understand theoretical concepts and possibly have tournament experience. Our Master instructor will instruct them in advanced strategy and planning. They will have an opportunity to study the games of current masters/grand masters as well. As is customary for Elysian, on occasion students in this class will “buddy up” with students in the beginner/intermediate class to provide assistance and experience being a chess instructor themselves.
